Cancelled Ad Campaign :)

About this tutorial

This image is from an advertising campaign that was rejected, much to my relief. It was an unusual and enjoyable image to shoot, but I did not feel the concept was a good one for advertising BMW – thankfully the ad agency and client felt the same way in the end. However, before that happened, we broke all sorts of rules in car photography, such as not using specular highlights to show form and make the car look all gleaming and shiny. It certainly made for an eye-jolting image!

Topics covered in this tutorial:
  • Working with scrims to create light fall-off on your subject.
  • Using seamless paper as a light modifier.
  • Simple image composites.
  • Creating backgrounds in Photoshop.
  • Using Photoshop to refine the shape of your lighting.
  • Adjusting tones and contrast in Photoshop.
  • Dealing with unwanted reflections on shiny curved subjects.
  • Colour correction in Photoshop.
