Three portraits - one tutorial

About this tutorial

The three portraits shot in this tutorial were designed to illustrate how to use a handheld meter to take comparative ratio readings. This method allows you to use the reflective readings on your meter to determine exactly the tone of any area in your image.   These tutorials also look at a number of different lighting techniques for subjects with darker skin tones. Flat tone and gradated backgrounds are covered as well as a range of post-production and retouching methods for portraiture.   Topics covered in this tutorial:
  • Critical metering techniques and comparative ratios.
  • Lighting for dark skin tones
  • Using accent lighting as your key light
  • Flat tone white and black backgrounds
  • Split tone grey backgrounds
  • Light fall-off
  • Base exposures using a ring flash
